Best fish for a 10-gallon tank
What actually fits in a 10-gallon: a betta, a shrimp colony, or a small school of nano fish. Not goldfish, not a common pleco, not a community zoo.
A 10-gallon is 20×10×12 inches on the sticker. After sand and a heater, you have closer to 8–9 gallons of water. That is a good betta tank, a good shrimp tank, and a tight nano school. It is a bad community zoo.
Measure the interior: tank volume. If the listing is metric, convert first: dimensions. Then run stocking with adult sizes, not the inch in the cup.
Pick one idea
A 10 does one job. The shops sell it as a starter community. That is how you get a betta, four tetras, two corys, and a “algae eater” sharing a box that cannot dilute their waste.
| Plan | Stock | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Betta | 1 male, maybe 3–6 cherry shrimp, 1 nerite | Heated, filtered, planted. The betta is the livestock. |
| Shrimp colony | 10–20 cherries, 1–2 nerites | Stable GH, no copper, plants. Fish optional, usually worse. |
| Nano school | 8–10 ember tetras or 8 chili rasboras | One school. Not both. Not plus a betta. |
| Livebearers | 3–4 guppies or Endlers, knowing fry | Mix sexes and you will have a population problem. |
Those four rows are four different tanks. Do not combine them.
Betta in a 10
Five gallons is the floor. Ten is more comfortable: a heater, a real filter, and plants he can sit in. He wants 76–80°F. A vase is not a tank.
Tankmates are optional. A few shrimp in heavy cover sometimes work. Many males hunt them anyway. Danios, tiger barbs, and other male bettas do not belong here. Use the betta checker and read the betta profile.
Shrimp in a 10
Cherry shrimp want stable parameters more than gallons. A mature 10 with plants, leaf litter, and no copper meds will grow a colony. Add fish that fit a shrimp in their mouth and the colony becomes snacks. The shrimp guide is the longer version. Amanos are better algae crew; they do not breed in freshwater, so you buy them, you do not farm them.
Nano school
Ember tetras want a group, not a pair. Eight to ten in a planted 10 is full. They are not a side dish for a betta that hunts. Chili rasboras are the same rule: one school, planted, cycled, then stop shopping.
What the 10 cannot hold
- Goldfish. Waste and adult size laugh at 10 gallons. Common goldfish want a tub or a pond, not a kit.
- Common pleco. Sold as an algae eater. Grows toward 18 inches. Common pleco.
- Angelfish, oscars, rainbow sharks, or a “starter community” of eight species from the same rack.
- Six corydoras plus a school plus a betta. Corys want a group and sand. They also want more water than this box has left after the school.
If the shop says “they’re small now,” believe the adult size on the profile.
How full is full
A 10-gallon that holds a betta is full. A 10-gallon that holds a dozen embers is also full. It does not hold both plus corys plus a pleco.
After you pick the list, run compatibility at 10 gallons. If it flags tank size, that is the answer.
If you can stretch to a 20 long, do that for a community. The 10 is for a single idea, done well: heat, filter, cycle, then the one livestock plan.

- Why is my aquarium water cloudy?
Cloudy aquarium water is usually a bacterial bloom, overfeeding, or stirred substrate — not a mystery. Test ammonia. Do not dump clear-water potions first.
- How often to change aquarium water
Most stocked community tanks want a weekly 25% water change. Goldfish want more. Test nitrate and dose conditioner for the new water, not the whole tank.
- How many fish can fit in a 20-gallon tank?
A 20 gallon long can hold a tetra school and corydoras. A 20 high is worse for swimming. Inch-per-gallon is not the answer — adult size, waste, and filter GPH are.
